Dakota Homecoming NEWS

The Talk Circle at the Dakota Gathering on Saturday, June 5, 2010, at 10:00 AM, in the Reconciliation Tent will focus on two topics.

The first topic will be the theme of the Gathering, "Celebrating our Children," and will focus on youth and ways that we, as adults, can mentor and support them to return to the traditional values of telling their truth, learning the Dakota language and sharing their knowledge with each other in a respectful way.

The second topic will be a discussion of the Covenant of Friendship and Reconciliation between the Great Dakota Nation and the City of Winona.  The City and the Winona-Dakota Unity Alliance have been engaged in discussions with the tribal governments of the eighteen Dakota Nations in the United States and Canada over the past three years on a precedent setting agreement that will formalize the process of reconciliation that the City and the Dakota Nations started in 2004.  The agreement will complement the Sister City Agreements the City of Winona has with Bytow, Poland and Misota, Japan.  The Covenant will be discussed by participating members or representatives of the eighteen Dakota tribal governments and representatives of the City of Winona and the Winona-Dakota Unity Alliance.  Everyone is invited to attend.
